Where Is It, Exactly?

Until reading its name somewhere online this morning, I had forgotten "Alabama" was a state.

I have just returned from spending a couple of days in Alabama.  I found parts of it to be a time machine.  There were places that have not been dramatically changed by technology, celebrity or concrete.  Some places are recognized as historic landmarks or direct links to the past and roots of the community.  I found people that do not feel the need to upgrade a community by first bulldozing it.  People that seem to have a stronger and solid direct link to their past, their family and the natural order of things.

So the question was directed to me.  What do people do when the live in the "country?"  They visit neighbors or family.  They tune their body clock to that of the rising and setting of the sun.  They sit on porches talk and reminisce. They practice the oral tradition of teaching one generation about the next.

While I was there it seems they do not hurry to the store for the newest CD from American Idol.  They do not rush to get in the Taco Bell line before 2:00am. They do not leave the house 20 minutes earlier because the radio mentioned traffic delays.

I discovered the epitome of "southern hospitality."

I am glad that these things still exist.  Now how do I move there?
